The God of All Comfort

7 Jan

who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (2 Corinthians 1:4 NIV)

We are assured that no matter what we experience in life, including those times of intense trial, we have a God who is there to comfort us. Notice it doesn’t say that God takes us from the troubling circumstances. God does not remove the consequences of human decisions and the repercussions of the Fall from our daily lives. But he walks beside us to help us navigate the rough terrain and embraces us in our moments of utter exhaustion and despair.

The word comfort means encouragement. God encourages us to persevere, to trust him, and to see the heavenly perspective of our situation. As the author of comfort, God teaches us by example what it looks like to encourage and give hope.

Because we have received from God such complete care and encouragement, Paul instructs us to pass along this same comfort to others experiencing trials and hard times. He blesses so that we may, in turn, bless others. Accept his comfort, learn from him, and pass it along.
