Hearing God in the Stillness

28 Oct

Have you had one of those experiences where every devotional, every song, every Bible passage seems to be talking about the same thing? This morning I read an email devotional that quoted Genesis 28:16, about God being present whether we realize it or not. I then read from Streams in the Desert, which talked about our rightful place in the presence of God. One passage from that devotional stated,

A quiet spirit is of inestimable value in carrying on outward activities; and nothing so hinders the working of the hidden spiritual forces, upon which, after all, our success in everything really depends, as a spirit of unrest and anxiety.

As I was reading that, the song Be Still and Know (Steven Curtis Chapman) came up on my playlist. Was it a coincidence that the same theme resounded from multiple sources? I don’t think so.

I believe God orchestrates these moments to emphasize something we need to hear. He whispers his presence and reminds us that he is with us, illuminating a message that is important for us.

Being still before God is a challenge in our busy lives. But when we take the time to be quiet and concentrate on experiencing him, we realize he is there. But as Mrs. Cowman writes in Streams in the Desert, if we are unsettled or anxious, we can miss the realization that his spirit is always present with us, even when our circumstances and agitated minds would make us believe the opposite.

I’ve been in that place lately. It’s been one of the most challenging periods of my personal and professional life, but God is present. And as I sit quietly in his presence, and he uses songs and scripture and the writings of others to remind me of  that fact, I am blessed by his tender care. I needed this reminder today to be still and listen to him, and experience him.

The lyrics to Steven Curtis Chapman’s song are a great reminder. This is not a bad song to get stuck in your head!

“Be Still And Know”

Be still and know that He is God

Be still and know that He is holy

Be still Oh restless heart of mine

Bow before the Prince of Peace

Let the noise and clamor cease

Be still and know that He is God

Be still and know that He is faithful

Consider all that He has done

Stand in awe and be amazed

And know that He will never change

Be still

Be still and know that He is God

Be still and know that He is God

Be still and know that He is God

Be still

Be speechless

Be still and know that He is God

Be still and know that He is our Father

Come and rest your head upon His breast

Listen to the rhythm of

His unfailing heart of love

Beating for his little ones

Calling each of us to come

Be still

Be still
