Authority and Power

2 Jan

The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” (Mark 1:27 NIV)

Though most didn’t know it at the time, Jesus, the itinerant preacher who somehow had the power to heal and preach better than the average teacher of the day, was the Creator of the Universe. God was in their midst, but many did not recognize the extent or Source of His power.

Jesus could have authority over nature because, as the Word of God, He set nature in order. He could speak with unusual authority because He is the source of Scripture – it is His breath that inspired the biblical writers.

In the King James Version, the beginning of Hebrews 12:2 says,

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

The Author of our faith has the author-ity to speak and act within our lives. A conscious awareness of His authority in our lives prevents us from claiming power that rightfully belongs to Him.

When I am mindful of His authority in my life I look for where He is working, where He wants to apply the power and authority that I steward to use. The power is not mine, but He entrusts it to me for His glory.

As the new year begins, I pray for an awareness of His right to be the Author of my journey, and conscious of the power I have to bless others.
