In the Name of the Lord

26 Aug

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17

What does it mean to do something “in the name of the Lord?” I think it means that we do everything with the intent and awareness of representing Christ. By aligning ourselves with Him we reflect Him.

Knowing that when the world looks at us they judge Christ according to our actions, we must soberly and with great reliance on His power do everything to bring Him glory. We show our allegiance to Him by committing to be like Him in all that we say and do.

That is why in the previous section of this passage Paul contrasts the worldly behaviors that bring us shame with the Christlike characteristics that bring Him honor. The list of godly virtues in Colossians 3:12 and following is very similar to the Fruit of the Spirit he introduces in Galatians 5.

Love is supreme, and should be the outer garment we wear to show our allegiance to Him. We shed the rags of earthly vices and put on the royal garments of peace, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

In Colossians 3:1 Paul reminds us, “since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above.” We do this by consciously choosing to clothe ourselves with heavenly attributes. And doing this in the name of the Lord brings him glory and reflects well on His name.
