Is Finding God’s Will a Shell Game?

Asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. – Colossians 1:9

Understanding the will of God feels like a shell game to many believers. We are under the impression that God is hiding His will from us and keeps moving it if we get too close to discovering it.

Paul prays that the Colossian believers may know God’s will through spiritual wisdom and understanding. That, I believe, is the often overlooked key. We must have our spiritual eyes, not our worldly ones, dedicated to the search. We will never find the will of God using earthly methods.

We cannot hope to make spiritual discoveries with earth-bound lenses. His will is hiding in plain sight, but we miss it if we aren’t applying spiritual wisdom and understanding.

God has revealed his will very clearly in Scripture, although we are constantly looking for details that apply solely to us. How will He use MY strengths, MY interests, MY gifts for HIS glory?

God is more concerned about the journey than the destination, but we are obsessed with the destination. Our bucket lists of accomplishments and goals go on and on…yet we overlook the spiritual beauty that is right in front of us. We dream for adventure in far-away lands, but His will often is for us to see the adventure in our own back yards.

We need to draw close to our Lord and Savior and ask Him to guide us through the Spirit, to open our spiritual eyes. He is not playing a game with His will, but our search for it must be sincere, persistent, and spiritual.
