And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ-to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11 NIVUK)

Love (placing high value on people, seeking their benefit), knowledge, insight, discernment, righteousness. These are the themes Paul emphasizes in these verses. And the ultimate goal of all of these is God’s glory. Our love must be wise and discerning, not so that we don’t go too far with our grace, but that we go farther than common wisdom would advise us.

Abounding love brings to mind Tigger, Winnie the Pooh’s friend who bounced wherever he went because to be Tigger is a wonderful the thing. He was so filled with energy and excitement that he just could not contain himself.

This should be the kind of a-bounding love we learn to lavish on those around us. Not that we literally bounce around them in an uncontrolled frenzy – that may have the opposite affect! But that our love would be evident and life-giving.

The fruit of righteousness comes from sacrificial living, both with our possessions and our selves. As we give of ourselves in abundance, with enthusiasm and joy, God is glorified and people are blessed. Throughout our busy days we need to stop and ask God, “how can I bless this person and bring you glory?”

He gives us insight that strips us of our normally self-focused thoughts and replaces them with Christ-like righteousness that shines into the situation. It is a beautiful thing when live abounds and God’s wisdom supersedes earthly wisdom, causing us to be extravagant grace-givers.
