The Father of Compassion and the God of All Comfort.

31 Jul

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,   the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us   in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,   so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;   if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,  so also you share in our comfort.

-2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Compassion and comfort. These are welcome words. Compassion we understand fairly well, and the meaning here refers to mercies. The plural form reminds us that His mercies continue to be poured out on our behalf: they are new every morning. The original word also emits the idea of pity. It’s a paternal term befitting the Father of compassion – the One who has seen our miserable state and taken pity on us to the point of sending His only Son to rescue us.

In our misery and despair our Creator comes to us with comfort and encouragement. he goes beyond empathy to strengthen us and fill us with hope; again, this is through His only Son. Paul says, “On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us.”

Paul also gives us a picture of the contrast of our troubles to His provision:

For just ast the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives,

so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

No matter what we face, we can rest assured that our Lord will be at the ready with mercy and encouragement. He is our ever-present help in trouble and will strengthen us for the journey.
